Relevance
Designed in 1986 by Larry Leight (founder of Oliver Peoples), the i’dentity frame is a landmark in eyewear history. Featuring a radical industrial-inspired design, flip-up lens mechanism, and architectural lines, it represents Leight’s earliest design work prior to the official founding of Oliver Peoples. Though not branded “Oliver Peoples,” this model is widely considered the blueprint for the brand’s aesthetic and craftsmanship.
Provenance & Cultural Significance
Produced in extremely limited quantities—reportedly only five pieces—the i’dentity gained international attention after being photographed on pop art icon Andy Warhol. Warhol’s portrait wearing this exact frame remains one of the most iconic eyewear images of the late 20th century. According to eyewear historians, Larry Leight designed the frame specifically for Warhol, making it both a design milestone and a cultural artifact. Its engineering, particularly the precision flip-up mechanism, was unprecedented in 1986.
Collector’s Note
This is not simply eyewear—it is a museum-grade artifact representing the intersection of design, pop culture, and brand legacy. A true collector’s piece suited for serious enthusiasts, investors, or institutions. Its rarity, condition, and provenance ensure continued appreciation in value and historic relevance.
